Clinical and Roentgenographic Studies on the Periapical Lesions

Abstract
Two hundred and fifteen cases of periapical lesions were examined by clinical and roentgenographic observation.
The purpose of this study is to make differential diagnosis of periapical lesions.
The results were as follows;
1. Total 215 cases of periapical lesions consisted of 110 cases of male(51. 16%)and 105 cases of female(48. 84%).
2. All of the lesions were classified as periapical cyst, chronic periapical abscess and periapical granuloma; each being 16.74%, 37.67% and 45.58% respectively.
3. The lesions were most frequently observed in the age group between2l and 29.
4. The lesions were predominantly found in the mandibular premolar(25.58%)and molar area(25. 12 %) followed by maxillary anterior region(17.67%) in the order of frequency.
The lesion of the mandibular anterior region(0.11%) and maxillary molar area(0.09%) were relatively low in frequency.
As a interesting feature, the periapical cyst were found favorably in the maxillary anterior region and periapical granuloma in the mandibular premolar region.
5. The lesions in the mandibular(61.40%)predominated those in the maxillary area(38. 60%).
6. Statistically significant differences in the maximal length of the lesions were found among the three types; periapical cyst being the largest(20.86¡¾5.84mm.) followed by periapical abscess (5. 20¡¾1. 23mm. ), and periapical granuloma(3. 32+1. 5Imm. ).
